La Pongal announces the launch and distribution of their debut full length album, “La Pongal” in Malaysia, Sri Lanka and Singapore through Artseek Records. La Pongal will take the stage on July 20, 2012 with a live performance, and an exhibition relating to folk music and folk culture at University College Sedaya International, Kuala Lumpur.
This album is a reflection of Tamil culture, its people, their lives, their stories, happiness, sorrows and their pain. The album features around 70 folk musicians from different parts of Tamil Nadu (South India), performing music from the land that they come from. The album includes handpicked sounds from various traditional Tamil folk art like Naiyyaandi Melam, Karagaattam, Themmangu, Devar Aattam, Thaalaattu, Kuravan Kurathi, Thappattam (Parai Aattam), Thudumbattam, Periya Melam. The tracks are carefully layered with these forms and some contemporary sounds without displacing their aesthetics. The project includes a collaboration of two other musical geniuses, Anthony Daasan and Pradeep.

La Pongal simply put, is a platform for folk music created by ‘Darbuka’ Siva that is on a continuous journey exploring indigenous and traditional forms of art. Traditional
styles of music gave birth to many new expressions. But the taste of the first ever styles remain deeply ingrained in the culture and people of its area. Designing different kinds of collaborations between folk forms and musicians, it is the band’s vision to bring the rustic folk styles and the experimental contemporary styles together.
